The Korean War: Context
Spark
After 5 years of tension in Korea, The Korean War started on June 25, 1950, after Northern Korean soldiers invaded the 38th Parallel that divided communist North Korea and the Republic of South Korea.
Goal
North Korea aimed to unite Korea under their communist regime, and forced South Korean soldiers to retreat behind the 38th Parallel, driving them into a corner.
Battle
After many battles, South Korean efforts started to show as they pushed North Koreans back to the 38th Parallel. Under their momentum, the South Korean forces pushed past the 38th Parallel. After a series of conflicts, the Korean Armistice Agreement established the Demilitarized Zone, but no formal peace treaty was signed.

United States Involvement
Concerned that the Soviet Union and Communist China incited this attack, President Harry S. Truman committed the United States Military and United Nations forces to assisting the Republic of Korea in their defence. The United States’ position in this conflict was clear–they were going to continue supporting Korea. After the end of the Korean War on July 27, 1953, the United States and the Republic of South Korea signed an official 1953 Mutual Defense Treaty.

Development
The United States-Korea Mutual Defense Treaty played a crucial war in the history of relations between Korea and the United States. Ever since the Korean War, Korea has aided the United States in every single war from the Vietnam War (including the recent Iraq War), bolstering their relationship.
